Description

Wood dowels inoculated with Phoenix oyster mycelium for log cultivation (Pleurotus pulmonarius)

Pheonix oyster, (aka Italian oyster) is a wild North American species that produces over-lapping clusters of edible mushrooms with a short lateral stem.  It is very similar to Pleurotus ostreatus, but prefers to fruit in warmer weather and can be grown on both hardwood and coniferous stumps and logs.

Drill hole in freshly harvested coniferous log, tap in plug spawn with hammer, cover with wax using a dauber.  Store log outdoors in shade, and soak periodically during extended dry periods.   Allow rain to soak and naturally cause the log to fruit mushrooms (usually in the spring and fall.)
